MONK MIX (CD2): Remixes and Interpretations of Music by Meredith Monk

Epic was a commission for Meredith Monk’s remixed album. I was given a selection of her vocal works to choose from and was drawn to Epic. In my studio with my co-conspirator, Raj Makhija aka RajStar, we chopped it up and gave it a danceable feel. The piano chords and organ sounds lead into her vocalizing and it felt only fitting to let them join with soul claps and a groove. Adding a dhol drum section midway imparts my sonic stamp while still giving the original piece room to breathe. As a DJ, I play to the room's vibe, and I wanted to make something that would be malleable in my sets and expose dancefloors to the brilliance of Meredith’s vocal technique. At the core of this exercise is what is fundamental in my art practice which is to be a conduit and bring seemingly disparate elements to entice audiences to move their bodies.
