Introduced by film critic Bedatri Datta Choudhury.
Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji star in a folk tale about a woman whose negligent husband goes on a trip and is replaced by an identical but far more loving, attentive and romantic ghost.
This beloved landmark of the Bollywood aughts has almost too many connections with the Parallel movement to name. Directed by Amol Palekar, who starred in films by directors like Shyam Benegal, Basu Chatterjee and Kumar Shahani, and based on the same Vijayadan Detha story that served as the basis for Mani Kaul’s Duvidha, Paheli also features lyrics by Gulzar, who moved ably as a multi-hyphenate artist between both worlds. Among Shah Rukh Khan’s earliest screen credits, one can count Pradip Krishen’s In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones and Kaul’s Ahmaq. 35mm Print Courtesy of the George Eastman Museum, gift of Mark and Arman Gabay.
A limited amount of complimentary tickets will be available to students with ID at the box office on the day of the screening.
